Platform workers in Indonesia describe their access to protection and social security in these terms –
A significant share of workers across all sectors reported provisions of health insurance and life insurance. However, workers also described deciding not to access these benefits on the grounds that they did not have the means to pay the premiums.
The app offered life insurance. But after hearing that the premium would have to be paid by the worker, I lost interest in the insurance offers from the platform. The only other available support channel was the customer service and the call center. However, they are not effective and can't really be relied on. They don’t provide actual help, so it feels pointless to try seeking assistance through the platform.
I’m more moved by the help that comes from the platform worker community. Even though we work for different platforms, they are willing to help sincerely because we share the same struggles. Support from the worker community is far more effective than any support offered by the platform.”

94% of workers reported being aware of government social security schemes. BPJS Health and BPJS Livelihood stood out as the most popular social security provisions. Unlike other countries, 76% of workers aware of schemes were also able to receive benefits. Still, workers reported gaps between awareness and access.
